Indonesia's Efforts to Clean the Dirtiest River in the World

Bandung, West Java (VOA) - In 2013 Green Cross Switzerland and the Blacksmith Institute declared the Citarum River as one of the most polluted places in the world with third place. The identified Citarum River has three main problems, in the headwaters there is critical land which causes soil erosion; along the flow appears sedimentation which causes flooding; also pollution of livestock manure, household waste, and factory waste. Various toxic compounds appeared in the Citarum river which had a negative impact on 35 million people in the 13 districts it passed.

The West Java Provincial Government has implemented two programs to restore the river ecosystem. In 2000-2003 there was once a "Citarum Bergetar" which focused on pollution control. In 2013, "Citarum Bestari" appeared which ambitiously wanted Citarum River water to be drinkable within 5 years - a target that eventually failed to be fulfilled.

The latest program, "Citarum Harum" with citizen support at many points, has gradually improved Citarum's condition, said Dadan Hermawan, a former Walhi West Java administrator. It can be seen in the eye through clearer water and less waste, said Dadan.

The Commander of the Siliwangi III, Tri Soewandono said, that he had transported 80 thousand tons of waste and sediment from Citarum. This was done by 1,700 military personnel along with 1,300 local residents. However, some of these precipitate garbages are still piled up on land and have not been transported to landfills for a number of reasons. The officer made waste processing at several points.

The Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, plans to establish a special work unit that will have a garbage truck and its own management specifically for Citarum. He said, the West Java provincial government would also buy 10 excavators to support Citarum Harum, hoping that the program's target would be achieved in 5 years.
